IRELAND: Fine Gael Calls It

From the Associated Press:

Leaders on both sides of Ireland’s gay marriage campaign say advocates of legalization have won a resounding victory with the ballot count still underway. Senior figures from the “no” campaign, who sought to prevent Ireland’s constitution from being amended to permit gay marriage, say the only question Saturday is how large the “yes” side’s margin of victory will be from Friday’s vote. An Irish Cabinet minister, Leo Varadkar, who came out as gay at the start of the government’s campaign, says Dublin looks to have voted about 70 percent in favor of gay marriage, while most districts outside the capital also were reporting strong “yes” leads. Official results come later Saturday. Varadkar said: “We’re the first country in the world to enshrine marriage equality in our constitution and do so by popular mandate. That makes us a beacon, a light to the rest of the world of liberty and equality. It’s a very proud day to be Irish.”

    Get. In. There.

  • Mark

On this ugly, flood watch, dull grey North Texas day – nothing would be closer to glorious sunshine than a landslide YES! in Ireland!

    • I’m in Irving, Mark. Where are you?

      • Mark

About 50 miles NE of Dallas (smack between Blue Ridge and Westminster) on a little patch of ground – that is incredibly sopping wet!

        • HadenoughBS

Hey, guys, I’m down here in rural Crawford where – although damp this Spring – it’s at least as green as I’ve seen on the Emerald Isle. I’m so very happy for our gay and lesbian Irish “cousins” on their incredible win at the ballot box. It’s as if rays of sunshine were to appear today!

          • Mark

Agrreed! It is g.r.e.e.n – high and low – and in between!

      • Reality.Bites

Well for heaven’s sake pull out of him before posting!

        • Mark

          You’re killin me!!

          • Reality.Bites

            That’s what Irving said!

    • Gigi

Classy. Can you imagine Tony Perkins congratulating the LGBT community if/when SCOTUS says YES to marriage?

      • Ed Burrow

        Would never fucking happen.

      • The bigots already have their butthurt press releases prepared to issue as soon as our decision is announced. The true believers will never give up the fight against us.

      • Mark

Hopefully Perky & the Pricks will take every good xtian mother’s advice to heart: if you’ve got nothin nice to say, then STFU!

      • BobSF_94117

        That’s because Tony Perkins isn’t a politician, isn’t a leader. He’s just a grifter.

  • Anastasia Beaverhousen

Just sat down with an Irish coffee, heavy on the Irish. Cheers to you for victory and showing the world how it is done with style and class.

    • Reality.Bites

And cheers to you for not letting this momentous event deter you from your normal routine of being drunk off your ass by 7:00 AM! :p

      • Anastasia Beaverhousen

Honey, in honor I went to Irish coffee, and passed on my usual screwdriver.

        • Oh dear, drunk commenting. Not pretty.

          • Anastasia Beaverhousen

What? What is this? What’s happening? What’s going on?

          • Nothing Darling! I saw that incomprehensible first draft of your screwdriver message. LOL.

    • disQusTed

It’s a Guinness day for me!

  • Mark

We should have all chipped in and sent Joe to Ireland for this event!

    • pierre denerome

My husband and I would chipped in one thousand $.

    • Gustav2

Does Time Warner have service in Ireland?

      • David Walker

Does Time Warner have service anywhere?

  • Dan Robinson

    Wonderful! Your move SCOTUS.

  • Ninja0980

    Congrats to Ireland!
Hopefully this will get the ball rolling elsewhere and set a stage for victory here.

  • jizabel

    YAY! Congratulations, Ireland!

  • Ninja0980

Anything can happen but at this point, the no votes are going to have to pull a rabbit out of a hat to win, and that sucker is buried deep.

  • JoeMyGodNYC
    • Mark

I can only imagine what it feels like to finally be really free. I’d be bawlin my eyes out, too.

  • j.martindale

Proud of my ancestors! Glorious day! And I am tearing up, too. June should be a good month.

  • clay

“We’re the first country in the world to enshrine marriage equality in our constitution”

Uhm, South Africa? The US and Mexico (though no one seemed to notice until lately)? Or does he mean explicitly?

    • lymis

South Africa has equality regardless of orientation in it’s constitution, but it subsequently took explicit laws to extend that to marriage equality – so you can make a case that marriage equality is not in their constitution, though it flows from it (as will soon be seen in the US about ours.)

This is both the first to explicitly write it into the Constitution and the first to do it by referendum rather than legislature or court.

  • Chris

I’m sitting here eyes wide open, in a total state of shock. I’m such a pessimist, I really questioned whether or not it would happen. My god, this is so amazing. It happened. This is your day Ireland!!!

  • Ninja0980

Being that we are both part Irish, the hubby and I feel a sense of pride today!

    • Bluto

We’re all Irish today! I’m so happy for our brothers & sisters.

  • bryan

This was a vote for love, equality and reason. But also against the hate preached by the catholic church…. Gallagher, Anderson, Brown, O’Donohue, Citizen Go…. You wanted the people to speak.. They have. They said fuck you.

    • StraightGrandmother

      Love Won!

  • Gustav2

    ….

  • medaka

Hey, TMA! Will those shoes be fried, boiled or just sashimi?

    • David L. Caster

Yeah TMA, want some solvent with that?

(Secretly, he or she is glad to be wrong I bet.)

      • disqus_oCvsL5SBJH

Of course! Who wouldn’t be glad to be wrong about predicting love would lose??

    • RoFaWh

TMA may have confused “literally” with “figuratively”. It’s a very common mistake.

  • Gustav2

    YAY!

  • Porkie

For today at least, we are all Irish! Congratulations 1 & all

  • David L. Caster

Whew. What a relief. Now I can go to bed at 3:30 AM PDT.

  • Ninja0980

If the hubby doesn’t wake up soon, I’ll be forced to wake him so we can celebrate this news.

    • Gaiboi66

I know right! I’m in West Hollywood and mine is snoozing right next to me. It’s about a quarter after five and I’m going for my run shortly. If he’s not up by the time I get home, he will be. He’s been somewhat anxious about this also.

Every little bit, changes the landscape a little more.

  • helen s

“Ireland hasn’t just said “Yes”……Ireland has said: “F*ck YEAAHHH” – Aodhan Riordain

    • StraightGrandmother

I Love ya Helen, words cannot express how happy I am for all the ppl who are gay, lesbian, bi-sexual or transgender in Ireland. But surely Helen this is a vote heard round the world. Blessings to you and deep gratitude as I know you worked uncountable hours to make this happen.

      You did it Girl!

      Ireland did it!

We ALL win because Ireland WON!

I hope you inspire leaders in Italy, Switzerland and Germany and Australia to step up their game, if you can do it in Ireland, so can they. You will only achieve that which you believe. Ireland shows that we all can believe.

      • helen s

Wrong Helen. There are a couple of us Helen’s here on JMG. 🙂

        • StraightGrandmother

Oh Darn! Gonna leave my comment as I am sure she will show up and realize it is for her.

    • zhera

Congratulations, Helen! I’m so happy for you and your country. You’ve shown that it IS possible.

      • helen s

        Hey hun,
There are two us Helen’s here (at least). I am doing my part on this side of the pond though. 😊❤

        • zhera

Your avatar confused me. But all is well, I’ll congratulate everyone here today!

          • helen s

I’m a bit of an avatar slut. I change it all the time, depending on my mood, mindset, etc. 😉

  • bryan

If you haven’t cried enough already : Found in a Dublin ballot box : ‘I vote yes, Carey, Age 9’

    • Silver_Witch

Okay that did it now I am crying what a sweetheart those Irish lads and lassies have.

    • ClevelandJim

      THAT made my morning!

  • Puckfair52

Go raibh mile maith agat! Ta athas orm. A happy day for all my dead gay irish ancestors and even happier one for all my living Irish relatives in Kerry,Tipperary, Galway & Limrick!

  • St Ulfsten

    Congratulations Ireland!
But calling yourself a beacon is a bit much, when we in Sweden had (limited) recognition of gay relationships, homosexuality was still illegal in Ireland.

    • StraightGrandmother

Oh I don’t think calling themselves a beacon is over the top. I think the point is that if one of these historically deeply anti gay countries can vote in by popular vote, with a landslide result, civil marriage equality then with time and effort any country can.

  • Ginger Snap

What a happy day in Ireland it must be even I’ve got tears of joy for them. America and the rest of the world it’s your turn to do what’s right.

  • JesusWasGay

    CONGRATULATIONS GAYS!!

  • anne marie in philly

    YAYZ!!!!!!!!!!

  • StraightGrandmother

Irish citizens who live outside of Ireland were permitted to vote in the referendum, however the law required them to come back home and vote in person. Thousands of people did, from countries far far away.

In honor of those people and those votes I am just going to lay this down here
    https://t.co/XRit0gaUC3

    • Homo Erectus

      Oops! blocked.

  • The Emerald Isle goes Rainbow!

Freedom might also find America soon?

    • We are hoping so! That Marriage Equality is for all of us Americans and not just 75% of us. We will know by the end of June, and are optimistic that our Supreme Court will say yes.

  • vorpal

And here I thought that Porno Pete’s utter humiliation was a good start to the weekend. This blows his little poorly balding head right off by comparison! What a wonderful thing to wake up to!

Congratulations, Ireland, and again, such a mammoth, massive thank you to all those who campaigned for love and who voted yes! You can’t possibly know how this message of acceptance and love and to see how far we’ve come from the days when I was a terrified little closeted gayling warms my heart! =sniffle=

    • medaka

It’s been a pretty great week, huh? Huge slices of schadenfreude-cake in Duggarville, Porno Pete embarrasses himself again — now Ireland! YAY!!!

      Next up SCOTUS ForUs!

      • Mark

        or – SCOTUS for ME!

        • medaka

A SCOTUS Marriage equality ruling for you! And one for you! And you!! Everyone here gets a fabulous ruling!

    • Gaiboi66

Awwwwww….closeted gayling, that was the cutest reference ever. I feel you. The horizon has changed so much for our gay youth, as well as for the lgbt community. I’ve been following this for a very long time and it’s been a hard fight. I’m so glad that the prospect for a resounding yes vote, will have paid off big time. Both in Ireland as well as the world.

Here’s keeping my fingers crossed for you Ireland for a generous win!

      • vorpal

Hahaha! Thanks! Now that I am a full fledged frisky great grown gay, I can celebrate the joy that more and more LGBT youth can grow up without knowing the shame, self-hatred, fear, and depression that come with having to be made to feel terrible about and hide something as profoundly important to a human being as one’s ability to share, experience, and feel love!

Hopefully this big snowball of LGBT acceptance will continue to gain size and momentum!

        • RoFaWh

          “Full fledged”

An interesting phrase, as “fledge” refers to birds learning to fly and leaving the parental nest.

          • vorpal

Well, my deepest thanks to the gay people that were patient and understanding enough to take this confused, damaged, self-hating little gayling in at age 18 and help make me into the confident, strong, accepting 37 year old person that I am today.

So in that sense, I am a full-fledged gay indeed!

        • Homo Erectus

May the gay young’uns never know what it’s like to hide in plain sight.

  • Ed Burrow

    Man, this just feels *GOOD*.
    🙂

  • Wynter Marie Starr

I have to admit I’m crying right now.I’m incredibly happy for the LGBT community in Ireland and around he world. This gives all of us who believe in equality a reason to keep fighting when we may be tired or frustrated. Well done Ireland!

  • The Luck of the Irish shines through on this wonderful day! Erin Go Brough — Ireland Forever! I found out I am part Irish last year – I took an ancestry.com DNA test and had no idea and I am Very proud and happy!

    • Mark

Damn. I could enjoy a little Irish in me.

  • ericxdc

No sadz postings today please? Today is focused on love and equality winning.

Tomorrow we can enjoy the sadz!

  • Mike in Texas

This is absolutely thrilling. I have goosebumps. Congratulations to everyone in Ireland, especially to those who worked so hard to create such a brilliant campaign for equality. Right now I am very proud to be of Irish descent.

  • Fantastic news to see this morning!!!

  • Homo Erectus

    I’m a little emotional myself 😉

    • Gaiboi66

Lmao!! I never tire from seeing that photo.

    • RoFaWh

Brown is such a drama queen.

  • pj

im proud of my people today…..because they are leading the world to love and acceptance this morning….i can feel it here in arizona and i couldnt be happier. who knew in my lifetime that this would be possible..that the haters would be shut up at last……well done ireland.

  • CB

You know, if I were even remotely religious, I might say that god’s hand was in this. And that the prayers that were answered were on the side of love and compassion, which is what their Christ preached. My parents were both faithful (Irish protestant) and at each of their funerals we sang their favorite hymn, which included the lines, “The powers of death have done their worst/But Christ their legions hath dispersed.” What remains of the faith they taught is that given a chance, love wins. When we get our egos and petty desires out of the way, then god can come through. My Irish mother would have seen this vote through her faith and a validation of Christ’s message of love, and she would have celebrated with great joy. I’m grateful for what I always heard from her after I came out–Love is Love. I’m sorry she’s not here to see how the world is changing, a bit at a time.

  • IamM

    Congratulations!!
Well done Ireland. Thank you to all the Yes campaigners.
    Let freedom ring!

  • TreGibbs
