PITTSBURGH: High School Students Wear Flannel To Mark “Anti-Gay Day”

It’s probably no coincidence that this happened on the day before today’s anti-bullying Day Of Silence. Via the Pittsburgh NBC affiliate:

A Pittsburgh-area school district is investigating allegations of harassment involving students. Several parents and students from McGuffey High School in Washington County have reached out to Channel 11 News voicing concern about a so-called “Anti-Gay Day” allegedly organized by some students. A group of students allegedly spread the news that if they were “Anti-Gay,” they were to wear a flannel shirt and write “Anti-Gay” on their hands. Below is a statement from Dr. Erica Kolat, the superintendent of McGuffey School District. “Yesterday afternoon, April 16, 2015, allegations of harassment were brought to the attention of our administration. McGuffey School District, along with school police officers, continue to investigate all allegations. We will follow our Student Code of Conduct, and file legal citations, as warranted. We resolve to ensure that all chi

Wonder where all the hate comes from. (Not really. I think we all know. Good Christian upbringing.)

    • Macbill

They never heard of “Live and let live.”

    • Gustav2

Good Christianist Exurban upbringing. These are the grandchildren of 1960’s and 1970’s White Flight.

      • Larry Ft Pierce

Oh, “white flight,” and they wonder what happened to Detroit, and all the other major cities’ urban areas.

  • Gustav2

Hey, guys, we have bars were everyone is dressed just like you! As soon as you turn 18…

    • Anastasia Beaverhousen

I thought it was an construction worker audition for the NEW Village People. “It’s fun to be A-N-T-I”

  • Todd20036

Some kids sure learned how to hate, didn’t they?

  • teeveedub

Flannel? Looks like a meeting of the Future Bears of America to me. Just sayin’.

    • Gustav2

I know, the poor dears really are into a certain stereotype. Wait until they get out in the real world.

      • Wait till their kids hear about it in 10 years.

        • Gene

wait till college recruiters, military recruiters, and the HR people in most of the Fortune 1000 who troll social medial before they go “no problems here, you may hire this person” see this.
the real pics WILL, unblurred, get out there in time, and facial recognition software is already being used in beta tests by some companies to REALLY scour the internet.
oh yes…trust me…they will pay for this down the road…and pay dearly

    • Jmdintpa

      exactly ….

    • that’s what i was gonna say! LOL

anti-gay, yet dressed like my buddies and i during a saturday BBQ at the Eagle!

      • Anastasia Beaverhousen

        No homo.

        • teeveedub

Even with blurred faces, they do look awfully chummy with each other, no?

  • Jmdintpa

christianity at its best. maybe they should have went with anti-black, anti- women, anti-hispanic, anti-science, anti-american,anti-everything that isnt white hetero and christian. how much you wanna bet at least two of them already sucking dick

    • RJ Tremor

There’s no mention of them being Christian. No doubt some of them are jock-tastic jerkwad bullies that pick of a flavor of the day to terrorize.

      • Gustav2

Who pray before every practice/game and that is the extent of their religious education.

  • Robert

    Maybe they are just bears?

    • Octavio

      Cubs?

  • Macbill

There’s a good chance at least one of them is a closeted gay. What better way to grow a “beard” to hide amongst the hets.

    • William

      Only one?

      • Emma Duncan

I figure at least 3 of them…body language says so much.

  • Stev84

They celebrate an anti-gay day by dressing like lesbians?

    • TampaZeke

…and hanging all over each other?

      • David Walker

        Bromance. No homo.

        • 2karmanot

          Bromo—-there, fixed it.

      • Joseph Miceli

So how many of these kids do you think are closeted and doing this to deflect suspicion from themselves?
The school environment for most LGBT kids is still nowhere near what it needs to be. They just aren’t safe and in many cases they suffer from PTSD.

        • NMNative

          My thoughts exactly Joseph!

      • Randy

The two on the far right are actually holding hands.

        • TampaZeke

I noticed that. I applaud them for breaking free of the shackles of male gender boxes but it’s odd to see someone breaking down gender constraints in the same picture that they are making an anti-gay statement. Very odd juxtaposition.

          • bambinoitaliano

They draw the line of holding each other’s cocks. For now.

      Beat me to it…

    • Todd20036

I wish it were a joke. I watched the article. THere is going to be an anti gay week, and there is a “lynch list” circulating. Many gay kids are afraid to go back to school.

    • MDB

Dumb-fucks like these are one more reason why I left my home-state of (western) Pennsylvania for college
out of state, and never returned to live there. I have only been back a half-dozen times in over 35 years to visit and each time I have been relieved to quickly get
      the hell out !!!

      • GC

Pennsylvania: Philadelphia and Pittsburgh with Alabama in the middle.

    • or perhaps they just want to be “Castro Clones.”

  • Michael Smith

I never knew the grunge look was associated with being anti-gay.

  • shellback

    Ironically, they look gay.

    • Stev84

Especially the two holding hands on the right

    • William

A couple bottles of Boone’s Farm and a tub of Crisco and they will all be gay.

      • TampaDink

But only on their hunting weekend trip together.

  • Swamp Fox

Stop on by and listen to some great to tunes while wearing your favorite flannel shirt… http://www.batsinourbelfry.com/

  • Steven Leahy

So why are their faces all blurred out? Aren’t they proud of what they’ve done?

    • Gustav2

      Minors

      • RJ Tremor

Yep. It’s the media that did it, not them. I wouldn’t mind their identities being known, but with the way information ends up being used these days, it’d turn into a debacle in no time.

      • Guest

        SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO?

        • GayOldLady

It’s their “civil right” to have their faces blurred since they’re minors.

          • ClevelandJim

Which is bullshit since THEY posted their faces to social media in the first place.

      • TampaDink

Miners? I thought that they were going for the lumberjack look. ;-p

        • ClevelandJim

so many fetishes, so little time…

    • If their faces were shown we could at least diagnose which have gayface.

      • Justin

I think we know the answer to that is some value north of 50%.

  • MikeBx2

Great idea. Wear flannel shirts and jeans (so not gay) then pose for a picture with our arms around each other and a couple of guys kneeling down at the other guys crotch level (still not gay).

    • Octavio

And send them all to a YMCA for a field trip. 🙂

  • Judas Peckerwood

Who knew that playing dress-up was such a straight and macho thing to do.

  • Tony Adams

Why didn’t they just put white hoods over their heads?

    • GayOldLady

White hoods might be too obvious. They figured that wearing filthy jeans and natty old flannel shirts, with anti-gay written on their hand, would be much more discreet.

    • William

The would be walking into walls. Those boys aren’t smart enough to cut eye holes into the hoods.

  • Isn’t Wear Flannel Day the same as Lesbian Construction Day or Bear Beer Day?

    • GayOldLady

We lesbians prefer denim, thank you! 🙂

      • Octavio

Well, in 2015, sure. But in 1960-something flannel was de reiguer. 🙂

        • GayOldLady

A trip on the way, way back machine.

          • Octavio

I was looking over old proof sheets a while back and found a photo of a friend tending bar at a famous lesbian watering hole and wearing a flannel shirt in the late 60s in SF. I scanned and sent it to her. She is mortified that I have that negative and has pleaded with me to destroy it. That’s what she gets for becoming a successful, high-profile Realtor and community leader who owns her own brokerage.

            Fortunately, she’s also a long-time and very out-of-the-closet Lesbian. 🙂

          • Joseph Miceli

Octavio, if there are ANY pictures of me from the 90’s in my Z. Cavaricci harem pants, mullet and ear stud, anyone possessing them will be inhumed with extreme prejudice.

          • Octavio

            Harem pants? Hmmmmm. . . .

          • 2karmanot

            Remember parachute pants?

          • Joseph Miceli

EXACTLY what I’m trying to forget!!!!!

          • 2karmanot

            OMG! The Balcony?

    • Paula

I don’t have any flannel shirts. But, then I do live in the desert, too.

  • TampaZeke

    Duck Dynasty Dimwit Douchbags.

I can only wonder how many closeted homos wore their flannel with pride that day.

    • barracks9

If this happened in Louisiana, they’d all be in camo.

      • GayOldLady

That’s true in most of the South. The only thing missing from this photo is side arms.

        • TampaZeke

I only have Mississippi skoolin’ but I don’t remember Pittsburgh being in the South.

And no, it’s not true of most people in the South. It may certainly be more prominent in the South, but it’s not reflective of most people in the South.

          • Keiffer

Washington is 30 mi SW of Pittsburgh. If you’ll recall that James Carville assessed that Pennsylvania is Philadelphia and Pittsburgh with Alabama in the middle, it would suggest that the latter even extends to the western border.

          • TampaZeke

A cat can have kittens in the oven but it don’t make ’em biscuits.

Even by that statement Pittsburgh isn’t Alabama. 🙂

      • KCMC

  • KP

Washington County is about a half-hour south of Pittsburgh (which is in Allegheny County). Once you leave Pittsburgh crossing a bridge or going through a tunnel, you’re in the sticks for the most part. People who live there – as well as other Pittsburgh exurbs – do so to avoid city taxes and will bitch and moan about Pittsburgh politics even though if you ask them where they live, they’ll proudly say “Pittsburgh!”

It’s assholes like these and others from outside Allegheny County who will travel to The Big City for a Kenny Chesney concert and leave the Heinz Field parking lots looking like this BEFORE the damn show even starts:

    • Anastasia Beaverhousen

      Pittsburgh, still,a shithole since 1948!

      • Joe knows who I am.

And people wonder why I’m full of cynicism and sarcasm. To live there and be LGBTQ is to understand.

  • SLK in SF

So glad to see that someone is keeping alive the ’70s/’80s Castro Clone look.

  • GayOldLady

I’m still amazed at the two guys on the right of the photo in their, closer than brothers, embrace.

    • LonelyLiberal

They thought it was lumbersexual day.

      • Octavio

        “Oh, I’m a lumberjack, and that’s OK,
I sleep all night, and I work all day.

I chop down trees, I wear high heels,
        Suspenders and a bra.
        I wish I’d been a girlie
Just like my dear papa.” 🙂

      • lattebud

Does that involve selecting and harvesting quality wood?

        • LonelyLiberal

In a perfect world. You have to selective harvest, however, no more than one wood per ten.

  • Kathy

Who is the haters? Can’t have double standards people. If they can have a gay day and not be judged why should these guys? Not everyone is gay and not everyone supports it.

    • Octavio

Kathy, I think it’s great you should support youth the right to look like Dykes on Bikes circa 1968. I’m sure they look real purdy. 🙂

    • Baltimatt

Except gays don’t hate straight people for being straight. We understand it is something they are born with.

    • Dale Snyder

There’s a little bit of a difference between supporting a stigmatized minority and showing disdain for the same, but I’m sure someone like you fails to see that difference.

    • shellback

“Who is the haters?” Perhaps you need to go back to your home-skoolin and concentrate on grammar.

      • LonelyLiberal

Not to mention the missing comma in the second sentence after “standards.” If you can call that a sentence, which you really can’t as it’s a fragment and lacks a subject.

The third sentence is missing a “not” after “should.”

On the up side, the last sentence is grammatically correct, but a 25% score definitely puts this deep in “stupid troll” territory.

        • Paula

Edjacashun is fer sissies and liburls.

          • I like our StraightGrammer. She rocketh.

    • GayOldLady

      “Who is the haters?”

People who marginalize a minority, attempt to deprive them of their civil and human rights and attempt to humiliate with an “anti-gay day”.

“If they can have a gay day and not be judged why should these guys?”

It’s sad that you can’t see the difference between being gay and being anti-gay.

“Not everyone is gay and not everyone supports it.”

You’re kidding, Kathy? And not everyone has brown eyes, and not everyone is right handed, and not everyone is a brunette, and not everyone has curly hair, but we celebrate those differences. Why should being gay instead of straight be any different?

    • tcinsf

The Day of Silence isn’t “gay day,” it’s a day to protest campus bullying, including anti-gay bullying. You’re ok with bullying? Apparently so, because you think an “anti-gay” day is ok. Speaking from ignorance, like bigots always do.

      • clay

Like Bob Dole, perhaps she believes what America needs is MORE peer pressure to conform?

    • shivadog

Is this sarcasm or are you just an idiot?

    • Rillion

Yep, just like for equality reason whenever there is an “anti-violence” rally we should have a day where people can promote violence by beating people up.

    • TampaDink

Having a gay day (which is pretty much every day for those of us who ARE gay) or an anti-bullying day are not minimizing the poor oppressed 90-95% of the human race. I’ve never seen a gay pride event billed as a straight shaming event & I think that we’d have heard if anti-bully days were devolving into harming bullies day. Can you grasp what I’m trying to express, Kathy?

    • Robincho

Who is the assholes? Kathy are.

      • “Kathy” turns up all over the place spouting drivel just like the above. I’m surprised she/he/it hasn’t appeared here before, but don’t worry; she/he/it will flounce off in a huff soon enough, whining about how ungrateful we are for spurning her/his/its wisdom and guidance.

  • JoyZeeBoy

I guess they have their right to make sure everyone knows who the real douches are. We keep telling the haters to own their hate. These kids did. Advertising their hate just put them under scrutiny and I bet they should be watched. I don’t see a bright future for them as long as they think like they do.

    • jomicur

I live in Pittsburgh and, believe me, in Washington County these clods most likely WILL have bright futures. At the very least, this kind of douchebaggery won’t hurt them. I won’t be at all surprised if some of them get elected to public office there.

      • Bj Lincoln

        That is sad and scary.

        • jomicur

Quick update: I just saw the story on the Channel 11 news. These goons have been openly harassing gay students–shoving them in the halls, leaving threatening notes on their lockers. Students have said they’re afraid to go to school. And the homophobes have promised a solid week of anti-gay activity next week, with special clothing for each day (orange shorts on Monday, etc.). So far, despite the presence of hard evidence in the form of photos, and despite complaints from both students and parents, the district hasn’t done a thing except promise to “investigate” real soon now. See what I mean about Wash. Co.?

          • As usual, school officials, and the school board does nothing. So, I suppose from this point forward, we just operate with the idea that all school officials and school boards are filled with bigots. And if they had their way, would run off all LGBT students.

          • William

Isn’t that cute, they’re still trying to convince each other that they are straight.

          • TampaDink

Oh…they go through this every time that they return from a camping trip together. Faith-based-shame turns the self-loathing into bullying assholes.

          • Bj Lincoln

They don’t have time and should be snatching each one of them up and giving them some diversity training. I would call every one of their parents and insist they pick their child up then discuss what is acceptable behavior. They have to put their foot down hard and fast.

          • William

Typical school/board position is to blame those being picked on, not the ones causing the problems. Acknowledging bullying probably opens the district up to lawsuits.

          • Stev84

Even without lawsuits it’s simply a lot more work

  • delk

Years of bullying, quick glance group read, fight or flight mechanism running high.

Back row, 2nd from left, green shirt: the leader, two guys on either side: dumb muscle, 4th from left, blue shirt: the brains of the unit, 5th, red and white shirt:has the ‘cool’ parents that let them all get away with shit, wall leaner and 2 crouchers: homework doers, test takers, let’s them copy for protection, first ones to take the blame.

    • LonelyLiberal

Yep. Danger evaluation: Leader, high. Muscle, fairly high but easy to trick. Brains, extremely high. Red shirt, moderate. Hangers-on, low to moderate depending on current place in the hierarchy.

Overall evaluation: Avoid at all costs. Has in with principal and teachers.

  • johngwilk

The day before the Day of Silence is also the time of Focus on the Family’s “Day of Dialogue.” So apparently these boys understand what the Day of Dialogue is really about.

BTW, I don’t know why those faces are pixilated. Why do we go out of our way to conceal the identities of bullies. Every single kid who has bullied gay kids to death in recent years has been able to get away with it, never being identified, never being held accountable. The friends and family of the victims know who these bullies are but they collude in this bully protection scheme.

      • Platos_Redhaired_Stepchild

Don’t blame it on the teachers. The parents don’t care about education so the children don’t. To paraphrase Confucious, “You can’t carve rotted wood”.

        • I wonder why parents stopped caring about their children’s education? What shifted in our society to so devalue the need for a well educated society?

    • DonnaLee

At first I saw the headline about Pittsburgh and was like WTF? But then I saw it was Washington. Then it all made sense. That area is close yet not that close, and backwards as all get out. I also don’t consider them Pittsburgh, just western PA,

  • JJS_prime

Celebrate by teaching your little rednecks to advertise their bigotry. Nice parents.

    • William

Confederate flags and SS tattoos for everyone!

  • TampaDink

I could understand this IF the anti-bullying Day of Silence were being advertised as anti-straight Day of Silence.

    • joe ho

good point. just like with marriage they’ve been taught that it’s a zero-sum game and it’s all black and white. in their stunted little religion-polluted minds gay marriage can’t coexist with hetero marriage.

  • Spot
    • Spot

If you want the actual pic.

      • Ragnar Lothbrok

Well well well, that is exactly what I figured they would look like. Except the gay ones.

        • TampaDink

I am not surprised that the squatters both look as though they are pretending to blend in, being that they are the only ones who don’t appear to be physically engaged with at least one other. (Unless we can confirm that they each have a hand of the guy standing behind them, resting on their necks.)

  • EDinMCO

    Flannel? Really??

  • CaliforniaDude

    Can we say closet cases?

  • e’ville_globeguy

A.K.A. “How closeted are you day”.

  • RLK2

This kind of stuff makes me more angry than listening to some right wing religious freak. This is a form of intimidation and should be punished with expulsion. This is hate speech, pure and simple.

  • John T

“Hey bros, let’s wear matching symbolic outfits, put our arms around each other affectionately, and tell everybody about how much our minds are occupied by thinking about gay people and the dirty things they get up to in bed!”

  • Outlaw Woman

I hesitate to offer any justification or explanation, but could this be simply explained by “contrarianism” or “rebellious” behavior?
When it comes to high-school kids, acting like butt-holes is often simply the end in itself. Sorry guys.

    • John T

I see boys who have the primitive social mindset of jocks (me ingroup, you outgroup!) but aren’t fit enough to play sports.

    • clay

Could be, if you don’t read the news reports of the harassment they’re accused of.

  • Ragnar Lothbrok

Have they never watched Glee ?

    WTF

  • Ninja0980

Betting my house one of those kids will come out as gay later on in life.

    • clay

      Sorry, but why ‘later’?

      • William

        Later tonight.

  • zhera

Flannel? Is that the most non-gay apparel there is? I though it was nazi uniforms, or maybe catholic frocks.

    • Leo Tallant

I was thinking that the bear needs to cut off those sleeves on that flannel shirt!

  • Mark

Shit, I’m wearing flannel today since it’s kinda nippy here in the mountains — nothing says straight heterosexual male like wearing similar clothes and standing close together – twits.

  • anne marie in philly

    kick them outta school!

    • Peter Wde

      For what, wearing flannel shirts!?

      • TampaDink

More likely from the additional reporting of them being physically aggressive, taunting the gay or perceived to be gay students & leaving threatening notes in their lockers. AND for wearing flannel shirts without tucking them in.

        • Peter Wde

If its determined there has been bullying or intimidation those responsible should be disciplined. But unless there’s some odd dress code at that school that prohibits wearing flannel – and I’m pretty sure there isn’t – then attempts to discipline them for the shirts will go nowhere.

          • TampaDink

Several comments in this thread offer links to local news coverage which indicates that these guys have been accused of much more than wearing flannel.

          • Peter Wde

At this point just accused. Innocent until proven guilty. If the accusations are substantiated then the culprits should be disciplined.

  • Dan

I know Washington County. This is not a surprise.

    • DonnaLee

I know right? Not for nothing a friend of mine who moved there only works there and lives there. All his activities are away from the area, since he’s lamented often about nothing to do there.

    • Oh’behr

Ha. Michele Bachmann in Minnesota is in another Washington County. Maybe there’s something in the water in Washington counties? Lol.

      • Nuff Said

Not all. Fayetteville Arkansas, in the news not too long ago for passing an inclusive non-discrimination law, is in Washington County

  • Tallulah

In the early seventies at Colorado State University (an agricultural college at the time with lots of cowboys) we celebrated “gay day” by wearing blue jeans. Cowboys were scrambling like mad to find slacks!

    • TampaDink

That was a custom at the University of Florida (in Gainesville, which has the state’s major agriculture program, when my sister attended. I recall she saying that it was mighty inconvenient for the normal students. She’s o.k. with the gays now that she knows that she’s related to at least one.

  • Emma Duncan

I will ignore the flannel-lesbian connection, but I will mention the lgbt sppporter and one time flannel wearer, Eddie Vedder and even though he preferred cardigans to flannel, Kurt Cobain.

    • JCF

You can’t say “Lesbian Wannabees” about this group: few if any of them, I bet, desire females!

  • Clungeflaps

Those guys are funny. I’m wearing a flannel shirt today.

I’m about as anti-fashion as you can get, I dress like a bull dyke. I guess I’m not really a gay then.

  • Happy Dance

The one on the left in the dark blue…where is his hand?

    • TampaDink

On the back of the squatter #2’s head, where he keeps it during their turn in the spotlight at their secret camping weekend parties.

  • JalapeñoBusiness

LOL at the the ‘burgh rednecks. Up home, we call these “yinzers”

  • Hal

Half of these good ol boys are probably closet queens hiding from themselves.

  • Justin

I’d love to let them know just how much flannel was part of the Castro clone uniform in the 1970’s.

  • BudClark

Guess they don’t know about lesbians and L.L. Bean.

  • BaddogLtd

    Just give ’em 10 years…

  • Dale Snyder

Wow! Four of the eight are already showing signs of biblical sinful gluttony and they’re not even 18.

  • matt n

then they went to play the soggy biscuit game.

  • noni

    Apparently Pittsburgh is the pits.

  • Steven Leahy

For anyone who thinks vicious homophobia is just a southern or midwestern problem, it’s not. I recommend watching “Out in the Silence” which documents homophobic hate in a small western PA town, Oil City.

  • NeverEclipsed81

So that is actually not a group of boyfriends taking a very choreographed and extremely suggestive pic?? The thousand words that picture speaks screams otherwise.

  • Uh, have they not heard of the ‘butch’ stereotype? Flannel and jeans, girl, uh huh. We know you wanna play with our toys, you don’t have to advertise.

  • Blake Jordan

There are few images that could be less gay…

  • Aikane Kai

How the fuck is plaid / flannel anti-gay? Growing up in MN, I wore plaid / flannel most days of my life back then.

    • Porkie

All they need now is to grow big moustaches to finish of their “not gay at all” look – alot they know.

  • JustSayin’

if you want to see the clear pic and several more of these little twits check here
    http://rand0mshitbl0g.tumblr.com/post/116579606441/please-reblog-i-would-like-to-this-on-here-to

be sure to look at the douche in the red flannel and the tweety bird yellow.

  • ‘Course next year gays and allies are gonna do the same thing and totally ruin their good clean fun as we always do and add in jazz hands to really kill it.

  • caphillprof

We know that so many homophobes are guys in deep denial of their own repressed sexuality. I predict that some of these guys will be in same sex marriages before their lives are over.

  • Guest

Silly bigots. Send in the bears!

  • Jerry Kott

It is Pennsylvania! Where bigotry is a cherished Virtue.

  • ChitownKev

and I thought that only lesbians wore flannel…

  • JDM

I’m going to love when they’re all 18 so their pudgy redneck little faces won’t have to be blurred and I can kick their fuckin’ asses.

  • BudClark

  • Marc

I live in Pittsburgh and Pennsylvania has often been described as a conservative state bookended by two liberal cities (Pittsburgh and Philadelphia). That seems about right. You don’t have to venture too far out of the more liberal ‘Burgh to find this sort of redneck mentality.

  • Platos_Redhaired_Stepchild

They look like they’re going to a lumberjack prom. Judging from they way they’re hanging all over each other they’re definitely “friends with benefits”. If this isn’t a hoax, i’ll eat my ἱμάτιον.

    • Robincho

I have no idea what you’re eating there, but could you maybe cut me off a slice?…

  • AT2016

Uhhh, Yea, lets check in on the high schoolers about 8 years from now and just see how far they have made it in the real world. And, do they not know that flannel was a big gay fetish in the 70’s and 80’s, and that flannel is quite popular with the LGBT women? So idiotic and immature. They must have winner parents as well.

  • “and write ‘anti-gay’ on their hands”….whoa. I gave up writing on my hands in grammar school. One would think this high school was in deepest darkest Texas or some other place unpenetrated by the light of knowledge.

  • That thing that they did is not right especially that there are many gays who are worthy to be respected and to be known as part of our community. Even if they have that kind of gender, they are still human.
