Ben Shapiro Vs Dan Savage

In a Townhall piece published today, wingnut commentator Ben Shapiro goes after Dan Savage for his recent invitation for Ben Carson to “suck my dick” and prove that homosexuality is a choice.

That is an insipid argument; were the shoe on the other foot, Savage would have to demonstrate that being gay is involuntary by engaging in sexual behavior with every male he meets. Given his prior solicitation of Rick Santorum, Mike Huckabee, and Herman Cain, that may well be his desire, but it’s a rotten argument overall.

But arguments no longer matter. Logic no longer matters. Feelings matter. We intuitively understand that behavior defines us rather than feeling; no one would label a vegetarian a person who deplores meat-eating but chows down on steak every night. But when it comes to sexual behavior, we look to get ourselves off the hook: All sexual behavior is involuntary, so how can we be expected to make decisions about it? Hence the left’s absurd lie during the Clinton era that everyone lies about sex; hence the asinine notion that chastity until marriage is an impossibility; hence the morally blind belief that societal pressure for sexual morality is discriminatory in the same sense that racism is discriminatory.

The result: No honest discussion can be had about the extent of human choice, the limits of human choice, and our own preferences among the choices human beings make. We are mere animals, forced by our firing neurons to act on each and every impulse. We have no choice. And those who say we do ought to perform oral sex on us.

So far Carson has stuck to his pledge to shut up forever about gay issues. But it’s only been a week.

  • bambinoitaliano

Awwww Ben wants to suck Dan Savage’s dick.

    • Strepsi

He soooo needs to take his angry little Wednesday Addams pouting mouth, and stuff a dick in it.

      • bambinoitaliano

Jealous little brat is mad he was not invited.

      • Robincho

It’s hard to believe that so much stupid could reside in such a small vessel…

      • kiltedyak

You’re right this guy needs a dick in his mouth more than any white man in history

    • TommyTune

Actually, I think he wants it up the ass – hard. Really, really hard.

      • Todd20036

        Go on…

      • JCF

        You’re both right! “Dirty Sanchez”

    • Raising_Rlyeh

He’ll have to get in line. I call first dibs lol

    • Ginger Snap

Kaboomblooiesmack, you hit the nail on the head.

    • YES HE DOES! “if the shoe were on the other foot” Oh, really, if the hets were fighting for a few rights? Hahaha! Ben’d STILL be a coward. Here’s where Ben admits he’s a gay who won’t admit it but just has to shamingly define us: “We intuitively understand that behavior defines us rather than feeling; no one would label a vegetarian a person who deplores meat-eating but chows down on steak every night. But when it comes to sexual behavior, we look to get ourselves off the hook: All sexual behavior is involuntary, so how can we be expected to make decisions about it?”
No, no, no! You don’t get to condemn us because you live a lie. A vegetarian doesnt necessarily deplore anything! Maybe as the joke goes, he really hates vegetables. A _vegetarian_ is defined by what he eats; he’s labeled to get dinner faster. Gay is an affectional preference, not a sex act. A gay person can be alone on a desert island, and in my case she might dream of mermaids rather than mermen… because pretty! This is why it’s incredibly wrong to evict people, fire people, over gender preference. Who are you to say what we can dream or who we can love? Look you jerk Ben, I’m one of millions of gays in a straight marriage. It happens. There’s no prize. You live your life, idiot! Yes, there’s pressure to pretend we’re not who we are. That way lies madness, bub, and you’ve gone around the bend. We’re sick of mad liars running our lives, harming our kids and throwing out their own. Try not living a lie. Try talking about you not us. Maybe you’ll feel less angry. But you know what? I don’t care. Until you’re out, until you’re not a deliberately deranged weasel, shut up about my people. Come out or shut up. As Pat Robertson urged us to say, Evil spirit, OUT!
      PS Suck his dick

  • bkmn

It is obvious that Ben does not understand the concept of sexuality….just look at him.

    • clay

“We intuitively understand that behavior defines us rather than feeling.”

I imagine it’s difficult to develop an understanding of any concept when his interior life must be cavernous and desolate, based on the quote, above.

  • Gustav2

When did Shapiro become a spokesmodel for the Vatican?

  • Jon Perry

One almost feels pity for such a sad angry little troll.

    • Todd E.

The key word here is ‘almost’….

  • sonoitabear

Methinks Benji’s upset that Dan didn’t ask HIM…

  • Guest

Always s̶t̶a̶n̶d̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶u̶p̶ Sitting down for what he believes in.

  • BearEyes

Little Damian appears to be jealous.

  • barracks9

Sex is to sexuality as weather is to climate.

I know that analogy is wildly imperfect, and I certainly would not expect Mr. Shapiro to grasp either part of that statement, it still has a ring of truth to it.

    • Gustav2

But I am not a scientist or a sexologist!

    • DannyEastVillage

actually, it’s not a bad analogy at all. No analogy is a perfect fit and I think you can be pretty pleased with that one.

      • barracks9

        Thanks, Danny!

    • TheManicMechanic

Sex is to sexuality as weather is to climate.

Coming from the guy who has caused quite a few warm fronts across the JMG readership, I think you nailed it. 😉

      • barracks9

Thanks, Manic – as I’ve said here previously, if I could remember how to, I’d blush! 🙂

  • oikos

Oops wrong troll, I was thinking of Thomas Peters. They are both angry little troll creatures.

    • TommyTune

Very easy to make that mistake.

  • Justin

    Sic ‘im, Dan.

  • RGG

I could not get past, “Savage would have to demonstrate that being gay is involuntary by engaging in sexual behavior with every male he meets.” What an idiot he is.

    • Xuuths

So of course heterosexuals have to demonstrate that being straight is involuntary by engaging in sexual behavior with every opposite gendered person they meet.

      What a complete moron.

      • DN

I read this part as projection… Shapiro seems to be signaling that he *does* size up every woman he sees as a potential sex partner.

Which fits with “perhaps you don’t like gays because you’re worried that gay guys will treat you the way *you* treat women…”

    • Jafafa Hots

Shapiro has proven that for him idiocy is involuntary.

    • StSean

how did the word “involuntary” get inserted into this discussion? dan never said that.

  • RaygunsGoZap

You went off the rails so quick, Ben! Involuntary is the wrong word together and you know it. That’s like saying your monobrow and ugly mug are involuntary because you choose not to wax or surgically reconstruct. natural gayness can only be verified by debilitating sexual compulsion, huh? And natural straightness is verified by what?

    • Soren456

He sets up that “involuntary” straw man and pummels it bravely to smithereens.

      “My work here is done.”

  • delk

Seriously, the dude could grow a little mustache and get a starring role in The Producers.

    • Octavio

But he’d have to have some talent. He doesn’t strike me as being able to pull off “the German Ethel Merman” don’t you know. ;-

  • Ninja0980

    Kapo says what now?

  • Christopher

    Seriously!

  • Billanddogs

“Demonstrate that being gay is involuntary by engaging in sexual behavior with every male he meets.”
And still these nitwits continue to equate being gay with having butt sex. I guess they’re too dim to understand the difference.

  • Bared Bear

how is it that damien from the omen still looks twelve?

    • Dagoril

      Lots of facials.

  • tomfromthenews

Ben, Dan was just being Dan. It’s his provocative (but spot-on) style.

  • oikos
  • Bj Lincoln

Being gay has nothing to do with sex. One can be gay and never have sex. He knows that. Because I do not wish to live my life without love or sex, I found a like mind lesbian to share life with. This harms others how?
While I like Dan, he is not the best we have to offer up as spokesman for our population.
ps. Is this Ben’s high school pic? He must have had a rough time to look so angry.

    • ETownCanuck

He may not be the best spokesman for our population, but he’s been one of the only ones to actually step up and do it.

  • RGG

The result: No honest discussion can be had WITH BEN SHAPIRO about the extent of human choice, the limits of human choice, and our own preferences among the choices human beings make.

    There, fixed it.

  • WNY

Aww, the poor widdle virgin lustful cockmonster is so vewwy, vewwy jealous that Dan didn’t offer him a taste….

  • Macbill

Perhaps he’ll gain a little wisdom when he makes his twenties.

  • Rebecca Gardner

What happened to Ben to make a young man so emotionally twisted?

    • oikos

      Conservatism.

    • lattebud

He didn’t get the cabbage patch doll for Christmas when he was 9 years old.

  • DannyEastVillage

I think something’s wrong with me: I can’t even follow Mr Shapiro’s argument.

    • oikos

If you turn on faux and watch 24/7 for a month, you’ll get it. It is the Rosetta Stone for derp.

    • RNegron

No, that means something is right with you! I would worry more if you could follow that word salad.

  • MickinDetroit

I don’t get how Dan’s “suck my dick” comment really makes the point he’s trying to make though. If Ben Carson were to suck his dick it doesn’t mean Carson chooses to be homosexual…just that he engaged in a sex act. I can go down on a woman right now…doesn’t make me straight.

    • Jamie Brewer

Listen to the beginning of Savage Podcast… I am so proud to have Dan Savage fighting on the front line for our rights.

      http://www.savagelovecast.com/

      • MickinDetroit

Yup.. I’ve heard him explain it and I get the overall point and I applaud him at every turn for his advocacy..but again, telling someone to suck your dick to mock the claim about how being gay is a choice isn’t making the point that being gay is a choice…sucking a dick doesn’t mean you’re gay. WANTING to suck the dick is a pretty good indicator though.

I think it’s just sort of a misfire. but that’s just me.

  • Bill

It’s gotta suck to want to belong so badly that you will set aside all reason and common sense (not to mention science!) in order to do so.

Shapiro is that kind of man. And seems proud of that.

    A fool and a tool.

  • Toasterlad

So, is this guy supposed to be a vampire, or what? Not sure what he’s going for with this look.

  • Raising_Rlyeh

” hence the asinine notion that chastity until marriage is an impossibility;”

Actually your own people prove that chastity until marriage is an impossibility. The majority of girls pressured into taking “purity pledges”, creepily by their fathers most of the time, have sex before marriage. Most people become able to have sex around let’s say 13 and most people are now marrying in their late 20’s. That means you think it’s possible for people to go over a decade without having sex. Hell, in your view and many of your followers people shouldn’t even date or kiss. Of course there are those of us who do like a little chastity ;).

“hence the morally blind belief that societal pressure for sexual morality is discriminatory in the same sense that racism is discriminatory.”

Fucking prove it you asshole. Prove that your specific bronze-age morality is true and that it should be what controls us all. You cannot prove that your “morality” is any better or more true than any other sets of morality or ethics out there. Your morality is not objective nor is it absolute so fuck off. Treating consenting adults differently based on who they are attracted to is discrimination. Like Savage said, if you think being gay is a choice choose to be attracted to men. I think that is a better test than sucking dick since there are straight guys who who suck or get sucked by other guys.

  • robirob

“No honest discussion can be had about the extent of human choice, the limits of human choice, and our own preferences among the choices human beings make.”

That is rich coming from a “my way or the highway” conservative pundit.

  • Reasonoverhate

Ever notice how it’s almost always straight, white, “christian” men that are claiming being gay is a choice all while completely ignoring the tens of millions of gay people that say it isn’t. Curious that…….

    • Tim in Big D

Furthermore, one of their favorites is to reduce sexual orientation to only a behavior (to make their ill-conceived point). Like using the term “sodomy-based marriage” and the like.

Cause, as we all know, they are ONLY heterosexual when their dick is actually inside a vagina. /s/

      It’s beyond ridiculous!

    • Steverino

In addition to the absurd implication that all human beings are naturally attracted to the opposite sex, but a minority consciously choose a “lifestyle” in which they go against this attraction and have sex almost exclusively with members of their own sex, risking estrangement from family, friends, and society, discrimination, assault, murder, execution, unemployment, etc., and have the audacity to lie about it, even unto death, when life would have been so much easier just following their natural opposite-sex attraction.

I have yet to hear a homophobe explain this.

    • bestfriend

Yes, except for when it’s a Black “christian” guy

  • LonelyLiberal

In a battle between those two, my money’s on Dan. He’s smarter, better built, and he’s been around the block a few more times than Ben has on his little mental Big Wheel.

  • he’s a simpering wimp of a boy, who not doubt would have led his fellow jews into the gay chambers had he been offered a share of nazi profits.

    what a twerpy little bitch.

  • DaveMiller135

Did I miss the memo about being straight being involuntary, and how they have to have sex with everyone of the opposite sex that they encounter? Like being straight, being gay is mostly fixed. People who are gay mostly desire members of their own sex, and mostly act, or fail to act on that desire, based on circumstance.

People who raise the “gay is a choice” argument usually don’t think they made a choice to be straight. They just think their way is right and any other is a deviation from the right way, and must have been chosen. Nefariously. They don’t accept that there could be different paths available to different people.

  • CottonBlimp

When did logic ever matter to these fuckers? When did they ever want an honest discussion?

All that has already happened, Ben, and the unavoidable conclusion of logic is that restricting people’s freedom and torturing gay kids is a whole lot of pointless misery with no discernible benefit whatsoever. But sure, keep on screeching that my freedoms are an affront to your obligation to an immortal God as petty and sex-obsessed as you, and keep on telling yourself that YOU’RE the logical one.

  • Steverino

Funny how The Addams Family managed to produce a couple of notorious homophobes: Uncle Fester cloned Christopher Doyle, and Pugsley and Wednesday fooled around and produced Ben Shapiro.

  • Attraction Not the Action

That is an insipid argument; were the shoe on the other foot, Savage would have to demonstrate that being gay is involuntary by engaging in sexual behavior with every male he meets. Given his prior solicitation of Rick Santorum, Mike Huckabee, and Herman Cain, that may well be his desire, but it’s a rotten argument overall.

So that’s how heterosexuality works? It’s involuntary? Is that why most heterosexual men are serial fonicators? Of course not. The argument is that sexual ATTRACTION is involuntary. and that sexual BEHAVIOR is chosen. Or not. But Shaprio’s nonsensical faux-argument is moot anyway.

Dan Savage could engage in sexual acts with Michele Bachman, Sarah Palin, and Ann Coulter, SIMULTANEOUSLY, and I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t be attracted to them.

So it’s the ATTRACTION, not the ACTION, Benji. But you’re too young, foolish and straight white male to understand. Which makes you totally unqualified to comment on the subject, beyond asking to suck Dan Savage’s cock. Good luck.

Noooooo. He’d have to engage in sexual behavior only with a male for the predominance of his life, regardless of his partner(s). Which I think he’s already demonstrated. And don’t think we haven’t noticed your not-so-subtle propaganda piece that gay men need to we “wildly promiscuous.” Nice try, twerp!

This country has historical and legal precedents that prove, that according equal justice, opportunity, freedom, rights and protections is the most workable and essential BEHAVIOR that one human being can extend to another. Regardless that person’s color, gender, orientation, national origin, religion or physical disparity.
Religion is a choice. It’s neither required or enforced in this country, but because of the inherent misogyny and reactionary aspects of it, LIMITS have been required in which believers have to respect the equal potential in each human being.
There is an obligation to understand the distinctions between anti social behavior, and the non exclusive aspects of pathology.
Whether being gay is a choice in which to have an active sex life, or not, is irrelevant to one’s human and civil rights. As this is true of whether a heterosexual has an active sex life or not.
No hetero person is qualified to decide, let alone KNOW how a gay person thinks and feels, nor how they should be treated.
Most of us humans respond to equal justice and so on, quite well.
What shouldn’t be in question, is who is deserving by such a narrow definition.
Everyone should know better by now.
Everyone. And anyone who doesn’t, is a selfish, arrogant, privileged piece of crap that’s too ridiculously fat in that privilege to recognize the moral essence of that.

  • DN

If my fiance were crippled in an accident and unable to ever have sex with me again, I would still love him with all my heart, and I would never leave his side.

Shapiro is engaging in de-humanizing reductionism.

    • Hear, hear! You get it, you love– like the Ohio widower whose husband had Lou Gehrig’s disease & is STILL fighting for rights to love the man, all the way to the Supreme Court this Spring. Our enemies are sick , twisted people. Maybe theyre closet queens, maybe they’re scared cuz they saw a het porno and were glad to see a dick. But people who don’t even grok who they themselves are keep telling the world who we are. As Charlie Brown famously said,”I just can’t stand it!”

  • teeveedub

It’s kind of amusing to see a peanut-brained twit like Shapiro attempt to engage in a war of words with the razor-sharp wit of Dan Savage.

  • Sam_Handwich

Shapiro’s an idiot, yes. But i don’t think Savage’s reaction to Carson was particularly helpful.

Sexual activity is but a single aspect of being gay OR heterosexual. Emotions, affection, philosophy, even politics are among the many things that form the foundations of our attractions and intimate relationships.

Reducing this simply to sex acts is stupid, whether it’s Carson, Shapiro or Savage. We need to stop playing into the anti-gays’ one dimensional worldview.

    • NZArtist

Savage wasn’t reducing being gay to a sex act. In challenging someone to suck his dick he’s making them confront the idea of intimacy of someone of the same gender. Straight people are going to have a negative (or at the very best, neutral) feeling about that level of intimacy. If Dan was female and had invited Carson to lick his pussy, Carson (assuming he’s straight) would have probably entertained the idea more positively.
If *Carson* invited me to suck his dick I’d react negatively, but not because he’s a man or because of the idea of male intimacy, but because he’s a complete wanker.
But I recognize in my reaction that I’m attracted to the idea of sucking dick and male intimacy because, well, I’m a big ol’ queen. Dan’s idea is that Carson will recognize in his aversion to wanting to suck dick that it’s because he’s not comfortable with male intimacy and that he cant choose to be comfortable.
I can choose not to suck Dan’s dick (if given the opportunity… I wonder, … actually I’m not sure I’d have a conscious choice on that. 🙂 I can definitely choose not to suck Carson’s dick!) but I cant choose to not crave male intimacy and be turned off by female intimacy.
I didn’t feel Dan was reducing being gay solely to a sex act. He used a tool to get a conversation going (which worked admirably). I guess the problem is that there’s nuance, and nobody these days does nuance.

  • James

Carson is inadvertently close to having a point, but it’s Savage’s point, which is that sexual orientation is about involuntary attraction. The challenge is for Carson, or any homophobic man who claims homosexuality is a choice, to put his proverbial money where his mouth is by demonstrating that his claim is true.

  • LarryChemEngr

This earnest little puppy is confused on many points.

    1) “We intuitively understand that behavior defines us..” Not necessarily. A person is gay if they are having same sex fantasies. If they are closing their eyes while having sex with another man in prison, and thinking about women, then they are not gay, despite the behavior. Our innate attributes defines us.

    2) “Savage would have to demonstrate that being gay is involuntary by engaging in sexual behavior with every male he meets.” This is a bizarre non sequitur. Being gay is involuntary, even if you are a gay celibate priest. Again, the behavior is not what makes us gay.

    3) “hence the asinine notion that chastity until marriage is an impossibility;…” Who ever said this? Where did this come from? Why is it even relevant?

    4) “No honest discussion can be had about the extent of human choice, the limits of human choice, and our own preferences among the choices human beings make.” Well, certainly no honest discussion with the likes of you. You and your gang are the pathologically dishonest ones.

One google search discovers studies re; physiological differences in the brains of lgbt individuals and heterosexuals. Shapiro’s salad spinner article is pointless.

His article is so rife with buzz word dog-whistle hatred that it falls apart out of the sheer weight of catering to his audience.

    http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2008/06/080616-gay-brain.html

It’s difficult to extrapolate, his piece is dreadful, but isn’t he basically stating that HIS opinion of proscribed “societal pressure for sexual morality” is the only option? He can’t account for physiological or biological differences so his only option is to equate sexuality as tenuously held in check by “society”? Any deviation from his ideas on sexuality mean rampant out of control cock gobbling?

What bullshit…..sheesh, why even try to figure out what he’s attempting to say. It conflates so many unrelated ideas.

  • BrianQTD

Is it just me, or does what he wrote make no sense whatsoever? I reread it several times (yeah, my loss) and it still reads like incoherent nonsense.

  • Sean

  • 2patricius2

Benny boy, you are the one being illogical here.

  • Ginger Snap

This sentence makes absolutely no sense to me. ” no one would label a vegetarian a person who deplores meat-eating but chows down on steak every night.” What is he trying to say, anyone have any thoughts? I’ve reread it a few times and can’t figure why it is there. I’m sure I’m missing something and I probably shouldn’t care.

    • Rrhain

He’s trying to claim hypocrisy: Someone who eats meat but tries to label himself a “vegetarian” would be considered a hypocrite.

He seems to forget that behaviour is motivated by feeling. After all, is he claiming that because he’s not having sex right this very second, that means he doesn’t have a sexuality?

      • Ginger Snap

Thank you Rrhain, I knew I was missing his bizarre comparison.

  • RB118

What am I missing here? First Dan Savage states that we have no choice in our sexual orientation and for Carson to prove that we DO have a choice that he make the choice and prove his point. Shapiro replies:
“That is an insipid argument; were the shoe on the other foot, Savage would have to demonstrate that being gay is involuntary by engaging in sexual behavior with every male he meets.”

Then at the end of Shapiro’s Palinesque rant he says:
“We have no choice. And those who say we do ought to perform oral sex on us.”

So at the end of his gibberish doesn’t he make the same argument and challenge to the entire world that Dan Savage made to Carson? Again, what am I missing?

    • RB118

      insipid |inˈsipid| adjective:
lacking flavor: mugs of insipid coffee.

How does Ben know what it tastes like?

      • Rrhain

Because Starbucks infuses their coffee with the semen of gay men, don’t you remember?

    • Rrhain

You’re misreading the final paragraph. He is trying to describe the horrendous outcome of actually treating gay people as sane human beings: Those horrible, evil gay people saying they didn’t choose to be gay are being mean and nasty to us pure and innocent people who say they did. See! See how horrible and evil they are?!

Does he not know the difference between sexual behavior and sexual attraction?

Gay people are gay because of attraction…and they don’t have to act on those attractions if they choose to…In other words, Savage or anyone doesn’t have to engage in sexual deeds with every male on the street just because they may be attracted to them.

Apparently, “FEELINGS” do matter. Militant anti-gay activist Shapiro “FEELS” that homophobia is moral and good; therefore, based on those “FEELINGS,” he “FEELS” it should be imposed on all the rest of us. I FEEL he is a clown.

Ben’s just upset a Savage Invitation has not yet come his way…

I think Ben’s a little jealous. Poor dear.

Ben wants to suck Dan’s dick SO BAD!!!!

    • Bill S

THAT would count as a point in Ben’s favor, if true.It would be evidence he had better taste in men than his wife does.

  • Mr. Creazil

If Ben is really straight, why doesn’t he have sex with every single woman he meets? What is he hiding?

Oh Ben…Ben, Ben, Ben, Ben…we like ourselves don’t we. You are also talking in a fucking circle! It’s pretty damn simple. IF you argue that sexuality is a choice, then hey, be gay. Simply put, simple to deal with. Although judging by how you would look, it wouldn’t take much for you to make that “choice” for a dick

I just yesterday heard of Ben Shapiro. I leave the radio on for my dogs when I go to work, and accidentally set it on the conservative station here in Seattle. When I got home, Ben’s show was on, and he was droning on about something stupid – taxes or something. He has a very annoying, nasaly voice, and I felt very guilty subjecting my pets to him and Rush and Hannity all day.

    • Aww, were they ok? Back in the day, on my own I suddenly adopted a massive mutt . Afraid to impose him on my husbear all night, I set up the dog crate in another room and turned on Dr Gene Scott. The poor dog howled, prompting the husbear to ask what the dog was listening to. He felt so bad about the answer, from that night on, our dog slept in the bed with us.

“And those who say we do ought to perform oral sex on us.”

I started laughing so hard I was crying. . . He can’t even say “suck our dicks”!!!!

  • Bill S

Another fuckwit who refuses to acknowledge the difference between sexual behavior and sexual orientation. And then has the nerve to say that no honest discussion on the issue can about the matter. Uh, that’s YOUR fault, not ours.

Maybe it’s too early, and I haven’t had enough coffee…but I didn’t understand a word that little man just wrote.
