Chicago Free Press Folds

Yet another LGBT print publication has bitten the dust.

The Chicago Free Press, once one of the largest GLBT newspapers in the U.S. has gone under. The paper had been on the “death watch” list since the editor in chief, art director, graphic designer, senior writer and most of the writers walked out in late December because the company had stopped paying its employees. The poor economy, dwindling ad revenue and the health of the publisher all contributed to the downfall of the paper. Managing Editor Kerrie Kennedy made the announcement in a letter: “Due to health problems, publisher David Costanzo is no longer funding the operation of Chicago Free Press. Consequently, the paper’s April 29 issue was not published, and it is not expected that any additional issues will be published. While this is unfortunate, I’d like to focus on the wonderful history of CFP.”
